📰 Trending

💵 Canada shed 40,800 jobs in July 2025, marking the largest monthly decline since January 2022 and the biggest drop in seven years excluding the pandemic

🧑‍🔧 Youth was hit hardest. Young Canadians aged 15-24 bore the brunt of the losses, losing 34,000 jobs. The employment rate for youth dropped to 53.6%, the lowest since November 1998.

💰 The hardest-hit sectors included information, culture and recreation (-29,000 jobs), construction (-22,000), and business, building and support services (-19,000). Manufacturing also saw significant impacts, with close to 10,000 fewer jobs year-over-year as Trump tariffs continue to affect steel, aluminum and automotive sectors.

🇨🇦 Immigration updates:

  • Express Entry draws in August issued 2,500 PR’s focusing on Healthcare and Social Services occupations (see full list here) and 2,500 invitations within the French Proficiency program

  • Canada is considering NEW categories for immigration:

    • Leadership: to attract more experienced senior managers to the country

    • Research & Innovation: to prioritize the selection of researchers and scientists

    • National security and Defence: to prioritize the selection of highly skilled military recruits from allied countries.

💵 How to stay ahead of the cooling job market?

There are less jobs, but that doesn’t mean there are no jobs at all. We all just need to work a little harder to find them. Here’s how you can protect your career:

  1. Stop chasing “sexy” jobs. Focus on the “Boring” industries that are always hiring.

    1. Waste Management & Utilities: People still need garbage pickup and power during recessions

    2. Healthcare: People always need medical care regardless of economic conditions

    3. Funeral Services: Death doesn't pause for economic downturns—and this industry needs administrators, not just embalmers

    4. Debt Collection & Financial Recovery: When times get tough, these roles explode

    5. Government Tax Services: Everyone still needs to file returns, making accountants recession-bulletproof

  2. Embrace contract work.

    1. Employers are hiring contractors because it's less risky than full-time hires. Don't see this as settling—see it as infiltration. Get inside, prove you're indispensable, then negotiate the permanent role from the inside.

    2. Extra perk - you get to reduce your taxable income through self-employed deductions. It’s a win-win!

  3. Go where others won’t look.

    1. Trade Associations: Most job seekers ignore industry associations, but they often know about openings weeks before they're posted

    2. Municipal Government Job Boards: Federal and government jobs have secure funding and lower competition

    3. Hospital Networks: Healthcare is adding 2 million jobs by 2031 - and not just clinical roles

  4. Know what you’re good at. Develop soft skills, and most importantly - your presentation and networking skills. In this fast evolving world, it is more important than ever to be specific about how you stand out from every other candidate.
