📰 What’s new

Last week, the government unveiled five fast-tracked "nation-building" projects worth over $60 billion in investment, promising to create thousands of jobs while making Canada an "energy superpower"

The First Five Projects

The initial fast-track list includes:

  • LNG Canada Phase 2 in Kitimat, B.C.

    • Why: double natural gas production for exports to Asia and EU

  • Darlington New Nuclear Project in Ontario

    • Why: this will be Canada’s first small modular reactor, powering up to 300,000 homes

  • Contrecoeur Terminal expansion at Port of Montreal

    • Why: expand our trade capacity by 60% and reduce dependence on the US

  • McIlvenna Bay copper mine in Saskatchewan

    • Why: for Canada to control the copper supply chain for the green economy

  • Red Chris mine expansion in B.C.

    • Why: extend the existing mine’s lifespan by 10 and production capacity by 15%

What's Coming Next Additional projects under review include upgrades to Port of Churchill, high-speed rail between Toronto and Quebec City, a 50-gigawatt wind project in Atlantic Canada, Arctic infrastructure corridors, and Alberta's Pathways carbon capture project.

💵 How to take advantage from this Infrastructure Push

The Darlington nuclear project alone is creating 18,000 construction jobs, plus 3,700 permanent positions that'll pump $500 million annually into Ontario's economy. LNG Canada's Phase 1 already put over 50,000 Canadians to work, with 300 landing permanent operations roles.

What skills will these priorities demand?

LNG/Energy Infrastructure: Here's where the action is: construction labourers, heavy-equipment operators, ironworkers, welders, electricians, pipe-fitters, and power engineers. The best part? LNG Canada has already invested over $10 million in workforce development, including a $2 million training fund that's helped 1,500+ apprentices get their start.

Nuclear/SMR Technology: The most direct jobs in demand will be nuclear reactor operators and power systems operators, but they're also hiring for "skilled trades, administration, communications and operations." The catch is that you will need provincial power engineering certificates and licensing from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. So if you’re interested in nuclear - getting the right credentials is a must.

Mining & Critical Minerals: The copper and zinc projects are hunting for mining engineers, mechanical designers, heavy equipment operators, millwrights, and environmental technicians.

Where will the jobs be?

British Columbia: If you're eyeing LNG work, focus on Northwest B.C. - specifically the Highway 16 corridor between Prince Rupert and Houston. Kitimat and Terrace are the towns set to grow.

Ontario: Durham Region just became Canada's nuclear capital. Quebec-based GE Vernova Hitachi is building the world's first BWRX-300 engineering centre there, creating 300+ direct jobs and training thousands more. Translation: if you're in Ontario and considering a career pivot, this is your moment.

Saskatchewan: Central Saskatchewan is where the McIlvenna Bay copper project is happening. The province is already big on mining - now they're scaling up.

How to pivot or enter in-demand roles?

How to fast-track your entry: LNG Canada offers a Trades Training Fund through the BC Construction Association for small-to-medium employers (under ~150 employees) in Northwest BC, which helps cover apprenticeship training and related costs. LNG’s contribution to this fund is over $2 million. If you don’t have an employer, you can appply for individual apprenticeship as well.

For women, LNG Canada’s “YOUR PLACE” program offers a four-week readiness program in skilled trades; it covers tuition, safety gear, and for those from outside the local area, airfare and accommodation to attend the training.

Nuclear pathway: Ontario Tech's Nuclear Career Accelerator is designed for exactly this moment - helping people pivot into nuclear careers. They get that the industry needs more than just engineers. Meanwhile, Power Engineering programs will set you up for that crucial 4th Class Power Engineer certification.

Look where no-one’s looking: while everyone's fixated on the Big Five projects, some mart folks are looking at the supply chain. 80% of nuclear project spending goes to Ontario companies, creating ripple effects throughout the economy. That means thousands of jobs in procurement, logistics, fabrication, safety, and project management — not just on the reactor site.

If you’re thinking about a career pivot, consider where these projects buy from rather than where they’re being built. Companies that supply steel, valves, pumps, safety gear, or even manage shipping and compliance will all need talent. And because these roles demand certifications, regulatory know-how, and skilled project managers, they’re harder to outsource.
